1. Make sure your goals are realistic-Sometimes, people believe they have hit a plateau when really, their body is just naturally stabilizing itself. You see, when you first start an exercise or diet program, the sudden change in your habits often leads to weight loss occurring quickly…then, after a certain period of time, your body will adjust to your routine and the weight loss will slow down.

This is not necessarily a plateau but a natural ebb and flow that occurs. Make sure that your goals are realistic and take into account how your body may adapt and you are less likely to become frustrated just because the rate at which you are losing weight slows down.

 2. Keep your diet in check-One of the biggest things people struggle with concerning weight loss is their diet. It is easy for those BAD foods to creep back in and by eating them, we stop our weight loss and hit a weight loss plateau.

Keeping a daily journal of what you eat is one of the best ways to ensure that you don’t go back to your former ways and allow junk food and empty calories to halt your progress.

 3. Sometimes, you need a break!-Oftentimes, to overcome a weight loss plateau, you simply need to take a break! I am not talking about a long break, but maybe just a few days where you eat a few snacks, and rest more than workout. This helps to “recharge” your body and get your mind focused once again.

Let’s face it, we can ALL get burned out no matter what we do, and this is why we look forward to vacations so much. Every 12 weeks or so, plan a little “vacation” away from your workout and diet routine.

Maybe just 3 days or so…then, get right back to it. Chances are, your progress will start again, your mind will be focused, and you will have overcome this temporary weight loss plateau.

4. Mix it up a bit-Changing things about your diet and exercise plan is a great way to ensure long term weight loss success. Your body will get used to just about ANY routing from the types of exercises you do to the types of foods you eat. If your routine gets TOO routine, it may be time to mix it up.

If you spend all day in the gym, try running a few miles outside and do some stair climbing at the local schoolyard bleachers. The same goes for your diet. Make some exciting healthy Mediterranean dishes if you have been focusing on oatmeal and tuna all the time. Sometimes just a little change here or there is enough to overcome even the most stubborn weight loss plateau.

5. When all else fails, seek professional help-If the tips above DON’T help, you might need the services of personal trainer or nutrition expert. Sitting down with them and explaining your situation may allow them to make some solid suggestions to get your weight loss goals back on track.

Stick to it, look for ways around it, and you can overcome just about
loss plateau you encounter!
