Fitness for Men: How Men Look at Fitness and What they Do to Get in Shape. If I had to sum up
fitness for men in one word, it would be bodybuilding.
Now, for some, the image of a well oiled massive guy wearing Speedos comes to mind, but this is more synonymous
with competitive bodybuilding than what happens at your local gym.We have all seen the guys who hit the gym on a
regular basis. They load up the plates, start pumping out reps, and are often as much concerned with the look of
their biceps than overall true fitness.

It seems that fitness for men is as related to ego as it is true health. Must be something in the wiring…well, I
am a guy, so I can relate.So, what do men do if they REALLY want to get into fantastic shape and be healthy at the
same time?
They need to develop an overall fitness for men plan that relies not just on getting bigger arms, but losing
fat, increasing their cardiovascular capacity AND sculpting their muscles to help support their body image goals as
well. Since hitting the weights is always big on the list though, let’s start there.
Now, there is nothing wrong with weight training, but fitness for men should involve more than just bench
presses and arm curls. In order to develop overall fitness, one should work the entire body as well.It is common to
see men in gyms focusing on one body part at a time, but in reality, exercises that hit several body parts at once,
or compound movements, are usually more efficient.
For instance, rather than just doing arm curls for the biceps, one could perform multiple sets of pull-ups which
will hit not only the biceps, but the shoulders and entire back as well. This will help to increase overall muscle
mass more quickly.
Exercises like the leg extension, which only hit the thigh muscles, might be replaces by squats which not only
work the ENTIRE lower body, but much of the upper body as well.Performing these compound movements will lessen time
in the gym and speed up overall fitness goals as well.
Next, we touch on cardio work. Cardio refers to work that is specifically designed to increase the heart rate
and burn calories. High intensity walking, running, biking, and jumping rope are all excellent forms of cardio.Many
men only focus on pumping iron and pay little attention to these exercises but they are crucial for an effective
and comprehensive fitness for men regimen.
It often works best to focus on performing cardio on days opposite those that weight training is performed. This
allows for proper rest periods so that the body can recover and muscle can grow.So, we have covered weight training
and cardio, what’s left? The one area that many still fail to pay attention to…the diet. What you eat and what you
DON’T eat is an important component in a fitness for men regimen.
It doesn’t matter how much you work out if you are consuming too many calories to burn off. You have to change
your diet if you want serious results.For me, increasing their protein intake is vital to help support muscle
growth. In addition, eating 5-6 smaller meals per day versus 3 large ones is the best way to ensure your body is
always burning calories and not storing them.
This will help to provide energy throughout the day when it is needed to fuel the additional exercise that will
be performed as part of the plan.An obvious recommendation is to include fruits, vegetables, and high quality
protein in your diet and try to eliminate empty calories such as sodas, cookies, pies, and other sweets.
