5 Common but Negative Effects of Obesity
Everyone has probably heard the term OBESE before and while specific definitions may differ, we can all agree that
someone who is obese is more than just a few pounds overweight.
While many of us could stand to lose a few pounds, someone who is obese needs to lose LOTS of weight.
In fact, most medical definitions of obesity say that someone who is obese is 25% or MORE over their normal

Unfortunately, it seems that the problem is only growing and the negative effects of obesity are affecting more
and more people each and every day.

1. Judgment from others-People can be harsh and those that are obese know this. The treatment given to people that
are extremely overweight may not be fair, but it is something that those who suffer from it will probably
experience at one time or another.
2. An ever changing and uncomfortable wardrobe-While it may not seem like a big issue, to some, dealing with
clothes that don’t fit can be an uncomfortable and sometimes expensive problem. As someone gains weight, it may
become necessary to continually purchase new clothes to keep up with their changing body type.
3. Undue Stress on Joints/Arthritis-As someone’s weight really begins to increase, their body begins to suffer the
negative effects of obesity as well. Your joints take the brunt of your weight, and overweight folks often suffer
from joint pain and if the situation is not corrected, this can lead to maladies such as arthritis and other joint
ailments.
4. Diabetes-Another negative effect of obesity is diabetes, primarily Type 2 diabetes. Evidence has shown that fat
cells don’t process insulin as easily as muscle cells so when a person has a great number of fat cells, it is more
likely that insulin created in the pancreas will be floating in their bloodstream rather than processed in their
body. This increase blood glucose level, if left unchecked, could lead to diabetes.
5. Heart Disease/Stroke-The most severe negative effects of obesity are heart disease or stroke. The heart must
work much harder in the body of an obese person and over time, this can lead to hardening arteries and eventually
heart disease. The extra work that the circulatory system has to do can also lead to ruptured arteries or blood
vessels which can interrupt blood flow to the brain and result in a stroke.
The above list only represents SOME of the many negative effects of obesity, but there IS some good news. All of
the things mentioned in the list above are reversible. By taking the time to lose weight and get into better shape,
you can lessen your chances of suffering from any of the conditions listed above and you even add years onto your
lifespan.
