Many folks, however, avoid trying to build muscle to burn fat and instead focus on the tried and true exercises that stimulate cardiovascular activity. The fact is, these exercises are often not enough by themselves to help them reach the goals they are after.

Running and other types of cardiovascular exercises are great to keep you in shape and can even do wonders to help burn fat, but if you are extremely overweight to begin with, it is often more effective to include some weight training as part of your fitness regimen to speed the ability to build muscle and burn fat.

As we stated, building muscle burns fat…well, running doesn’t build that much muscle, or should I say jogging does not.Your legs will get toned for certain, but overall, not much body muscle will be built from a daily routine of jogging.

Sprinting, on the other hand, has the ability to build significant muscle and is a fantastic way to build muscle to burn fat. Many of us are not in the shape required to begin a strenuous routing that is built around sprinting, so this is why lifting weights is such a fantastic way to establish a well rounded exercise program that includes cardiovascular training as well.

So, what kinds of weight training exercises should one do in addition to their cardiovascular routines?Well, the squat for one is an awesome exercise that will both build muscle to burn fat and burn calories while performing the exercise as well. No other single exercise recruits as many of your muscles as the squat does.

If you are not looking to build monster thighs, opt for lighter weight but higher repetition routines. How effective is the squat? Some studies have indicated that a workout consisting of 5-6 sets of squats using moderate weights (weight that will allow you to perform 12-15 repetitions) can burn as many calories as running several miles.

Another great weight training exercise is pull-ups. While these are extremely difficult for some, performing negative pull-ups is a great way to build up the strength required for this killer upper body workout. To do this, simply stand on a chair near a pull up bar and grab onto the bar, step off the chair and slowly lower yourself down. You are basically doing the second half of a pull-up.

By performing a few of these per day, you will soon be able to complete repetitions of full pull-ups yourself. This exercise is a great way to build muscle to burn fat as it builds every muscle in your back, shoulders, biceps, and forearms.

So remember, to really speed up your fat burning goals, build muscle to burn fat using the tips given above and you will reach your fat burning goals in no time at all!
